I'll never forget Willis Reed coming out on to the floor! "Captain of the Knickerbockers.......Willis Reed" Still get goosebumps when I see that clip!

the Captain made hundreds of thousands of people happy for a long time - this moment was however the peak - thanks Willis

FINALLY RESPECT

This game was over before it started. When Willis Reed came onto the court before the game, the Lakers stopped practicing. They all stared at the "Captain." Mentally, they were beaten, and the Knicks went on to play a near perfect game. I'll never forget listening to the game on the radio and then watching the tape-delayed broadcast later that evening. To me, it was the greatest moment in MSG history.

When Willis stepped on the court that night before Game 7, I was 14 years old. But I remember grown men in tears from the sheer emotion ... everybody knew we would win. I still have the vinyl record that has Marv Albert's call (" ... and here comes Willis!") and I break down everytime I listen to it.

dreambig - 11/01/2006
Willis deserves a moment all his own for the incredible inspiration!
Flag

most of the 4th quater no one in the crowd sat down---- we had the Knicks, Jets, Mets-- New York was the city of CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!

larryl - 11/02/2006
Fraizers performance in Game 7 was the single greatest feet that I ever witnessed in a basketball game. To have a hand in 74 points is a monumental task. To do it in Game 7 of the Finals was MAGIC. This is by far the greatest moment, to me, in MSG History.

gigiarny - 11/02/2006
The most exciting moment in Knick history

A great moment in NY sports was the Knicks winning their first championhip. Truly a great team with great players and a great bench. Willis was super as the captain and Frasier had one of the greatest game 7 in sports history. Red as the coach was magnificant. Knicks, Jets and Mets all won a championship which made for one on the greatest years in sports history for any city in the world.

Go knicks
Flag

theking - 11/13/2006
willis did limp on to the court. but that night was the the greatest performance by a new york knick and the performer was the one and only walt "clyde" frazier.
Flag

rich16 - 11/15/2006
game 7 had more mysteries to it than an episode of columbo,no 1 knew if willis was playing til game time then willis took 1st 2 shots, scored, then rested rest of game as knicks used willis as emotional edge as lakers were stunned in game7
Flag

rickwknapp44 - 11/15/2006
To watch game 7 we had to try at least 10 locations before we found a dinky little bar that had the game broadcast. When Willis took the floor you knew that the Knick's were going to win!
Flag

asgrand7 - 11/16/2006
the ultimate MSG moment, still talked about to this day
Flag

Simply, the greatest moment was Willis stepping on the court, inspiring us to this day.
Flag

devilsfan007 - 11/19/2006
this should be number 1
Flag

tezzy - 11/23/2006
Willis Reed stepping onto the court for game # 7 is the greatest moment in garden history. I was 10 yrs. old and I remember it like it was yesterday.
Flag

greatest msg moment,ever!

jamesa33 - 11/23/2006
Knowing that Reed would be coming onto the court at the last minute before the Game 7 tip-off on May 8th 1970. I also was the offical scorer for the first BAA game at the 49th street Garden on Nov, 1946. JAW

These games were so good that they deserve to be ranked seprately. There was never a greater Garden moment than when WIllis came out. How could this not be the #1 event? Sure the Rangers game 7 was amazing, but this was the first champoinship for the Knicks and was done in the most drmatic way possible.
Flag

jeff-21 - 11/28/2006
No disrespect toward Willis who was very courageous, but the comment stating that Walt Frazier "contributed" 36 points and 19 assists to the victory is part of the problem with sports. While the stage was set by Willis, the performance by Clyde was out of this world and deserved top billing in this one. Wilt's shock and poor performance against an injured player is one of the reasons he gets knocked so much about his career. Nonetheless, thegreatest moment for the Knick franchise.

Number One - No Doubt

debbie1956 - 12/01/2006
i was there. i remember it as if was yesterday. the screaming, the pounding of the feet. i've never experienced anything like it since. when we saw willis come out, we knew. the whole place knew. the lakers knew. it was over. like everyone else who was there, it still gives me chills when i think of it and brings tears to my eyes when i see the moment replayed.

Willis Reed limping on the floor for game 7 showed the heart of a captain and a champion!

listened to this one the radio. Marv had me on the edge of and Reed gave me goose bumps when he came on court. The anticipation was well worth it.

A "Willis Reed" return has now become part of the lexicon, it is a top ten moment.

EmBee - A classic performance from a class bunch of men. Where did players like that go?
Flag

mushstache - 12/15/2006
When Willis Reed came out that night, I thought that it was one the most unselfish things a true player can do and you knew that the Knicks were going to win the Title that night.
Flag

raja2170 - 12/21/2006
i agree with dave debusshere. there is no game 7, with all its pathos, if the little giants didn't pull off that miracle and whip LA in game 5. i can't believe that it's not talked about more. those were the greatest moments in MSG history to me. nothing else is even close.
Flag

ilr823 - 12/22/2006
HOW DOES WILLIS COMING INTO GAME 7 NOT RATE AS THE #1 EVENT IN MSG HISTORY? I AM A DIE HARD RANGERS FAN AS WELL-NOT TO DIMINISH WHAT THE RANGERS DID IN ANY WAY- BUT, SERIOUSLY, WILLIS IN GAME 7 AT # 39???????????????? AND ITS LUMPED TOGETHER WITH GAME 5 & 7? THERE SHOULD BE A SEPERATE MOMENT FOR WILLIS REED'S ENTRANCE, GAME 5 & GAME 7..........SERIOUSLY, DO YOU SEE WHAT WAS RATED AHEAD OF THIS???? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING...THIS POLL IS A JOKE!!!!
Flag

hyerrick - 12/26/2006
I was just hired by IBM and was working second shift. With no vacationn or sick time available I went into work, but was going right out of my nmind thinking about the game that night. I asked my manager if he could find a way to send me home. He said this "Are you kidding me? I'm going home myself, just keep it to yourself". He sent the whole department home for the greatest game in garden history.
Flag

steinfeldm - 12/27/2006
the greatest moment bar none should just be willis coming out of the locker room for game 7--he clearly sacrificed a good part of his career for his teammates and for the moment.
Flag

bobbyj - 01/04/2007
unbelievable. how can this be rated so low. #48, you gotta be kidding. it's even lower than the championship in '73. it's obvious that this "greatest ever" stuff appeals to a much younger audience. for those of us old enough to have been around when the magical moments of games 5, when the "minutemen" overcame the giant chamberland and game 7 when willis came out of the locker and clyde went nuts. give me a break. and you guys at msg. get it together. was jabar even in the nba at that time, let alone with the lakers. no!!! but you have him on your video saying that they didn't score, etc what's up with that. no doubt those were the greatest garden moments of all time.

The Quintessential Garden moment.

#39? ARE NEW YORK FANS BECOME IDIOTS ALL OF A SUDDEN, OR DO WE NEED A GRADING CURVE BASED ON AGE. HOW THIS IS NOT IN THE TOP 3 MOMENTS IS MIND BOGGLING! THE MOMENT IS WILLIS WALKING OUT. THE REST OF GAMES 5 & 7 ARE MEANINGLESS! THIS MOMENT DEFINES THE KNICKS AND THE KNICKS DEFINE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, PERIOD. ELVIS? WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT A GUY SELLING OUT AN ARENA, CONSIDERING THAT HE SOLD OUT EVERY ARENA? MANY ELVIS SHOWS, BUT ONLY ONE ENTRANCE LIKE THE CAPTAIN'S! #39? YOU CALL YOURSELF NEW YORK SPORTS FANS? YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. GO ROOT FOR A TEAM FROM L.A., YOU'LL FIT IN OVER THERE!
Flag

This should have been a lot higher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No question. The warmups for Game 7 are the single greatest moment in MSG history. With all due respect to The Greatest and Smokin' Joe, the Knicks are the Garden's primary tenant. Their first championship. And one of the single most inspirational moments in team sport history. Willis hit his first two shots and never scored again. He didn't have to. Clyde went off for 36.
Flag

oldknickan - 01/23/2007
Willis' pre-game entrance to Game 7 is by far the greatest moment in MSG history, in and of itself. I agree with many comments herein - the 2 day buzz had the Knicks certain loss without Willis. His entrance alone set the stage for a stunning conclusion to a stunning season. This is to take nothing away from Walt's performance, but Willis put the positive hormones into the Knicks and the crowd and deflated the Lakers' chances before the game even started.
Flag

lars - 01/26/2007
This should be ranked #4. You guys are out of your minds. #1 = Fight of the century #2 = Rangers Cup #3 = 9/11 benifit. Baased on money the Garden brings in, it may have been number 1 for the season but c'mon gimme a break!

I had chills as Willis came onto the garden floor. The greatest NBA player ever with HEART. WE NEED HEART TODAY ON THE KNICKS.
